 ✧ Terms Explained

A Simple Background refers to any setting that does not form a complete environment. This can include gradients, patterns, abstract shapes, props, or small decorative elements such as frames or premade brushes. Even small grounding props or items held by the character count toward this category, but the overall piece should remain minimal and not establish a full scene.

A Complex Background depicts a clear environment with objects arranged in the foreground, midground, and background. These pieces provide a sense of place and context, showing that the character exists in a defined setting rather than against a decorative or abstract backdrop. 

For shading, pieces with No Shading display little to no consistent lighting. A drawing with one or two shaded areas or a single gradient layer still qualifies as no shading.

Full Shading is present when light and shadow are applied throughout the work. This includes any approach in which the shading is visible across the entire piece, whether using a single consistent tone or multiple tones influenced by different light sources.
